My roommate asked me about racism in Champaign, because the stories she's heard about the cops around here have scared her (uh...with good reason). And I said, well, it's just really segregated. And then she looked at me and said, "That's what racism looks like." Oh. Yeah.
We're ignorant because we're segregated and we're segregated because we're ignorant. Would racism even be possible without ignorance? I don't think so. Racism is the ignorance that discrimination based on race is wholly arbitrary. But the ignorance of my father, for example, cannot be blamed entirely on my father. What would you expect?
Everything evil is easy, and climbing out of the past, and out of our own selves, is so difficult.
